The major indexes kicked off November with a volatile trading session that managed to end positive. The Dow closed up 0.8%, the S&P 0.7% added and the Nasdaq gained 0.2%.

Here are Monday's winners and losers:

Winners

Ford Motor Co. (F)
The auto maker saw its shares leap 8.3% Monday after reporting a quarterly profit that topped $1 billion. Ford shares last traded at $7.58, up 58 cents on the day.

Coventry Health Care Inc. (CVH)
The health-care company started the week in positive territory, with its stock gaining 5.4% Monday. CVH shares closed at $20.90, a gain of $1.07.

Varian Medical Systems Inc. (VAR)
An upgrade by Soleil Securities boosted shares of the medical-equipment manufacturer by 5.4%. VAR shares ended the session at $413.18, up $2.20 on the day.

Motorola Inc. (MOT)
An upgrade by Citigroup helped the mobile phone company's stock rise 5.4%. Motorola shares finished Monday at $9.03, a gain of 46 cents on the day.
